A recent report determined that half of implementations of Microsoft Corp.’s SharePoint collaboration platform go ahead without a formal business case. According this research by The Association for Information and Image Management, a content management industry association.

The challenge this is causing lies on the content management and records management side. The ease of creating SharePoint sites means end-users can implement the technology. And the fact that end-users are creating their own meta data means that data has to be remapped for the records management function. Clearly a better business case is required to handle to the Records Information Management issues in particular legal requirements for secure document storage.
